Swimming Pool, Pond, Spa and Hot Tub Safety

For entertainment, exercise and general family living, many of our beautiful Wellesley homes feature water amenities: pools, ponds, spas and hot tubs.  Tragedy can happen quickly.  Enjoy but be vigilant.  Here is a quick reminder list:

  • Adult inspection and supervision is always mandatory. If a child is missing, check the pool first.
  • Strictly enforce all family pool rules. Insist that guests understand and accept all rules.
  • Invest in swimming lessons for all family members.
  • Post and follow all manufacturers’ recommendations, especially for diving boards, slides and water toys.
  • Post first aid and CPR instructions and the Wellesley emergency phone number: 911.
  • Keep life saving equipment handy and familiarize yourself with correct use.
  • If there are non-swimmers in the house, consider installing a pool alarm.
  • Worn or damaged drains, drain covers, suction fittings and water jets must be repaired or replaced immediately.
  • Completely remove pool covers before using the pool, spa or hot tub.
  • Proper illumination is a must but water and electricity don’t mix well. If there is any doubt about any wiring, err on the side of caution and seek professional advice from any of our wonderful Wellesley electricians.
  • Check the security and viability of all decks, tiles, steps, ladders and handrails.
  • Install and routinely inspect fences, self-closing and latching gates, baby barrier fences, and alarms. Fences should be at least six feet in Wellesley and have self-latching locks out of a child’s reach. Furniture and toys that could be used for climbing are not placed near fences.
  • For health and safety, water chemistry and water clarity are necessary.
  • Stay informed. Lots of online advice is available. Here’s a start: http://www.TheAPSP.org
