What’s a Wellesley home without a hot tub?

Question: Unlike some residents, we live in Wellesley but we aren’t made of money.  My son loves that spa store on Route 9 and keeps telling me that a hot tub for our deck would be a smart investment, would it?

As an investment …

From a real estate perspective, definitely NO

From a mindful, relaxation perspective, definitely YES.

As a home amenity, the hot tub might – might – have a 50% return on investment.

If you are on a budget and your Wellesley home needs a roof or new windows or new heating/air conditioning, definitely don’t do it.

Energy efficiency improvements have high rates of return.  Adding living space is good.  New kitchens and baths are good.  Painting, cleaning and landscaping are always good.

If your son is of working age, you can encourage him to contribute half the cost of the hot tub installation.  Then, you have relaxation to gain and no money to lose.
